Flying With a Vape: What's Allowed in Your Carry-On and What Isn't

Kompakter Vape Pen im Handgepäck neben Reisepass und Bordkarte

Packing for a trip and wondering whether your vape pen can come along? The short answer: yes, in most cases, but only in your carry-on and only if you follow a few clear rules. Here's what airlines allow, how many devices you can take and what to check before you leave.

Can you take a vape on a plane?

Yes. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) allows passengers to carry battery-powered smoking devices such as vape pens for personal use. The catch: they may only travel in the cabin, never in checked luggage.

The reason is the battery. If a heating element switches on by accident inside a suitcase in the cargo hold, nobody can react. In the cabin, the crew can step in straight away.

Important: Airline rules only cover the flight itself. Whether you're allowed to bring a vape into your destination country is a separate question, more on that below.

Carry-on yes, checked luggage no

These rules apply on practically every airline in Europe and beyond:

  • Carry-on only: Your vape pen goes in your hand luggage or your pocket, never in your checked suitcase.
  • Switched off: The device must stay off and be protected against accidental activation for the whole flight.
  • No charging on board: You may not charge vapes or their batteries on the plane.
  • No vaping on board: Using a vape is not allowed on the plane, including in the toilets.
  • Spare batteries in the cabin: If you carry spare batteries or power banks, they also belong in your hand luggage.

Since 15 January 2026, the Lufthansa Group (including Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines) has applied stricter rules for e-cigarettes and power banks: e-cigarettes must be switched off and stowed away for the entire flight.

Why compact vape pens are travel-friendly

Not every vape is equally practical on the road. Large refillable devices come with tanks, bottles of liquid and spare parts. A compact vape pen is much simpler:

  • Pre-filled and sealed: Our pens come ready to use. No refill bottles to pack and nothing that can leak from an open tank.
  • Built-in battery: The battery is fixed inside the device. No loose spare batteries to carry.
  • Small format: A slim pen fits easily in a pocket or a toiletry bag.
  • Choice of size: The 1 ml pen is the most compact option. The 2 ml version holds twice as much, handy for longer trips.

Tip: Our vape pens are activated by a button. Keep them in a small case or pouch so the button can't be pressed by accident in your bag.

How many vapes can you take on a plane?

There's no single limit that applies to all airlines. The ICAO rules allow vapes "for personal use", and each airline sets its own details.

A common guideline is a maximum of 15 portable electronic devices per passenger, used for example at German airport security checks. That number includes everything with a battery, so your phone, laptop, headphones and vape pens all count towards it. Airlines can set their own limits, sometimes lower, sometimes not stated at all.

RuleWhat it means for you
Where to packCarry-on or on your person only
Checked luggageNot allowed
Charging on boardNot allowed
Using on boardNot allowed
Number of devicesPersonal use only; common guideline: max. 15 electronic devices in total
Spare batteries / power banksCarry-on only; Lufthansa Group: max. 2 power banks

Our recommendation: Pack only what you need for the trip and check your airline's "dangerous goods" or "baggage" page before you fly. Rules can change at short notice.

Do vape pens count as liquids at security?

Refill liquids must follow the usual liquids rule: containers of up to 100 ml in a clear, resealable bag. Pre-filled vape pens contain only 1 or 2 ml in a sealed chamber. Security staff decide how to handle them, so the easiest option is to put your pens in your clear liquids bag or keep them ready to show.

Your destination's laws matter most

An airline allowing your vape on board doesn't mean you may bring it into the country you're flying to. That's where most travellers get caught out.

  • Countries with a vape ban: Some countries prohibit the import, possession and use of vapes altogether, including nicotine-free devices. Thailand and Singapore, for example, enforce strict bans with high fines and even prison sentences.
  • Cannabinoids are regulated differently: Rules for CBD, HHZ and similar cannabinoids vary from country to country. HHZ is currently listed neither in Germany's BtMG nor in the NpSG annex (as of August 2026), but that says nothing about other countries. HHC, for example, is now banned or controlled in most European countries.
  • Transit countries count too: If you change planes, the rules of the transit country can also apply.

Our clear advice: Check the official customs or government website of your destination and any transit countries before you travel. If the legal situation is unclear, leave your vape at home.
